Becoming a foster carer in the UK involves a comprehensive application process. Here is an overview of the typical steps you can expect when becoming a foster carer:
The first step to becoming a foster carer is to reach out to a local fostering organisation near you. We at Foster for East Midlands are the leading fostering authority across Nottingham, Derby, Nottinghamshire, and Derbyshire councils. We have reliable training for foster carers, a huge network of current and past carers, and a fast completion process.
We also place foster kids with families quicker as we have direct access to government resources and funding. It is always important to reach out to a few agencies to see what would be the best fit for your particular situation. This will help you to find one that aligns with your values and goals. Too much money is being fed into for-profit organisations whereas we reinvest everything back into our projects.
We conduct multiple information events every month, both online and in-person to fit your schedule. This helps potential foster carers understand the foster care system, the needs of children in care, and the process of becoming a foster carer. It is important for you to attend these sessions to gather information and have any initial questions answered.

All potential foster carers are required to go through pre-service training to gain the necessary skills and knowledge to look after children in their care. This training can cover a range of skills and fostering needs, including child development, trauma-informed care, and legal responsibilities. We provide all the necessary training to get you on your way to becoming a foster carer.
Once you have completed the pre-service training, you can submit your application to foster. This applications process usually involves background checks, criminal record checks, and an assessment of whether you are suitable to become a foster carer.
When you have submitted your application to foster and the organisation you have selected is satisfied with initial checks on their end, a social worker will conduct a home study assessment to evaluate your home environment.
Not only will they check your home, but they are looking for any markers of your lifestyle, as well as your ability to provide a safe and supportive space for a child. Clear 'red-flags may include no food in the fridge, excessive alcoholic drinks, whether the state of the home is 'safe' and 'appropriate' meaning whether it has furniture and no damage to the building itself. The relationship between the potential foster carers if they are in a relationship. These are a few things to take into consideration.
This assessment is comprehensive and involves interviews with all members of the household. It is very important to be open and honest during this process to make sure you have the best chance of passing.
We will request references from your personal and professional network to gain a broader perspective on your capabilities and suitability. Additional checks may include health assessments and interviews with other professionals who know you.
After completing these assessments and checks, you will asked to attend a panel interview. This usually consists of professionals from our team, where we will review your application, training, and assessments. This interview is also an opportunity for you to discuss your motivations and why you feel you are capable to become a foster carer.
If the panel approves your application, you will receive an official approval to become a foster carer. At this stage, you will also go through the terms of the fostering agreement, which outlines your responsibilities, the support you'll receive, and the fostering organisations expectations.
Once approved, we will work to match you with a child whose needs align with your capabilities and preferences. The matching process is carefully considered to ensure the best possible fit for both the child and the foster family.
We at Foster for East Midlands have direct funding from the government to train foster carers as quickly and efficiently as possible. We place children far quicker than any alternative.
Foster parents receive ongoing support and training from us directly. This includes regular visits, access to support groups, and additional training opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.
It's essential to communicate openly with us throughout the process and to stay informed about your rights and responsibilities as a foster parent.
